constructing 'tough girl' costume 21/3/23

Using a second hand camo jacket, I decided to construct a jagged hem utility skirt to reflect the attitude of the 'tough girl' trope. Inspired by film characters such as Lara Croft from Tomb Raider and Ripley from Alien, I wanted to create a garment which has both functional and aesthetic elements. My approach was quite random, first attaching the deconstructed pieces together and then cutting sharp lines from the bottom to emphasise the rugged aesthetic. I chose to add pockets as I feel this character would definitely carry gadgets and weapons on her missions. I made slight alterations as I went along, cutting sharper shapes like the pointed edges at the back of the skirt. I feel this really enhances the unapologetic nature of this character, and her disregard for stereotypically feminine silhouettes. Next I am constructing the boiler suit, adding camo details to create a cohesive costume and potentially adding structure or padding to the shoulders for a more powerful outcome.
