Gender Interview with peers 10/3/23

I found this discussion with my peers about gender extremely valuable in my research process. Being queer myself, it is very interesting speaking with fellow queer people about their relationship with gender identity, sexuality and self expression. What I found particularly interesting was the fact that when talking to a gay man about his gender, he said he felt more in touch with femininity, whereas a gay woman said she felt more masculine. Words like 'flamboyant' and 'sensitive' were used to describe himself, whilst she referred to herself as 'masculine' and even abnormal. I think this speaks volumes, as the queer community are constantly forced to repress their true identity under a facade of femininity or heterosexuality, as this is deemed the 'correct' way to express oneself. This made me even more determined to ridicule gender binaries, as they can be so harmful. I asked several women what they thought 'feminine' attributes were, and unsurprisingly the answers disregarded typical expectations of women. 'Strong willed' and 'rational' were my favourite words, with the expected 'sensible' and 'emotional' also being said. I think this perfectly conveys the duality of women, which is why my exaggerations of these outdated female archetypes is so important as they are just another way of depicting women as one dimensional hollow beings.
